glossy paint on black car | no scratches or swirls

If your unhappy with the look of your vehicle, paint correction will bring the shine and gloss back to your vehicles paint. Anybody can shampoo automotive carpet and upholstery, but it takes skill and experience to restore paint back to like new condition. Paint correction varies from a one step polish to multi stage polishing, the condition of the vehicle will need inspecting before an exact quote can be given.

What is paint correction?

Paint correction is a term used in the detailing industry to describe the process of removing or greatly reducing the imperfections that are found in a vehicles paintwork. The photo below depicts the most common imperfections I see in the automotive detailing industry. These imperfections, also called defects greatly reduce the shine and gloss of your vehicle. If you neglect your vehicle the number of defects will grow, causing the paint to become dull and discolored. as the number of defects increase, so does the amount of polishing needed to remove them.

Common paint defects seen in the mobile car detailing industry. only solution is called buffing, polishing or paint correction.

In order to remove these defects, machine polishing or buffing the paint is needed. The process of machine polishing is not a simple and quick process, before any machine polisher can touch the paint there must be prep work. Prepping the vehicle for polishing is a vital step in the process restoring the paint to showroom condition. To prep the vehicle I preform:

  • A very detailed wash to rid the paint of surface contaminants.

  • Chemical decontamination removes embedded brake dust. To do this a certain chemical is used and when sprayed on the surface of the vehicle dissolves the brake dust.

  • Mechanical decontamination with a clay bar. This step removes all embedded contaminants in the vehicles clear coat that werent removed by step 1 and 2, things like airborne chemical compounds, ferrous (iron containing) particles, adhesives, industrial fallout, rail dust, acid rain, bird droppings, road tar, grime, tree sap, bugs, water spots, brake dust, road salt, oil, paint over spray.

  • All rubber trim and plastic accent pieces on the vehicle are masked off and covered. This ensures no polish finds its way where its not suppose to.

In order to remove the imperfections in the paint, I use an abrasive liquids called compounds and polishes. These liquids will in a nutshell, act as sand paper. They remove a very small amount of clear coat off the vehicle to create a level and uniform surface. Your vehicle's protective shell, called clear coat, is so incredibly thin that machine polishing the wrong spot for too long might cause serious damage. Machine polishing should always be preformed by a professional that knows what they are doing and has experience.

one stage polish

This is the least aggressive option for somebody looking for paint correction, a one stage polish entails polishing the paint work in one stage or one step with only one type of polish and pad combination. This is a perfect service if your vehicle has light scratches/swirls OR if your budget doesn’t allow a two stage polish. A one stage polish involves refining the paint work with a polish that is on the less abrasive end of the spectrum. Although a one stage polish will only remove 60%-75% of paint defects, your vehicle will look glossy and shine just like a fresh paint job. After polishing, the paint is protected with a very durable paint sealant.

two stage polish

A two stage polish is suited to cars that have moderate swirl marks and light scratches and involves using 2 different polish and pad combinations; the first step is generally a cutting (abrasive) polish, to remove imperfections such as swirl marks, light scratches and other moderate paint defects. This is followed by a finishing polish and finishing pad to refine the paint work even further by removing any marring or holograms left by the previous step, it is then followed by a paint sealant or ceramic coating.

after a two stage polish the paint is left free of imperfections and looks like it just rolled off the lot!

Typically a two stage polish is all that is needed to achieve a showroom finish on a vehicle. But in the rare case a three stage polish is needed or requested, your vehicle is meticulously and surgically polished to remove every defect. The outcome is a finish that rivals a new paint job.
